The Middleport Community Advisory Panel – CAP

Middleport Community Advisory Panel, or CAP, is a group of concerned community members that meets monthly. It is the express intent of the CAP to provide Middleport residents credible information regarding community issues, FMC plant activities and environmental concerns.

CAP members are all community residents from a variety of walks of life including parents, teachers, a police chief, business professionals, students and retirees. CAP members are chosen by local community leaders and serve a three-year term on the panel. Meetings are run by a facilitator, Ann Howard, who is also an instructor at the Rochester Institute of Technology in nearby Rochester, New York.

The CAP provides two-way communication with the FMC plant, the governmental regulatory Agencies and the Middleport community on a variety of topics. "Viewpoints," the CAP's newsletter, is produced and mailed to all community residents to inform them about issues related to the FMC plant and the Middleport Community.

In 2009, the CAP continues to address issues related to the FMC plant, the environment and to provide high quality information about these issues to Middleport residents.

Mission

It is the express intent of the FMC Middleport Community Advisory Panel to provide residents of Middleport credible information regarding community issues, environmental concerns and activities, and FMC activities.

OBJECTIVES

The CAP accomplishes this mission by:

  • Helping to facilitate and enhance FMC's relationship with the community.
  • Being an active agent in determining and addressing the concerns of Middleport residents regarding the FMC plant and community.
  • Providing the community with objective and accurate information about FMC, which is one of the community's largest employers and taxpayers. It does this through word-of-mouth, at various events, and its quarterly newsletter.
  • Encouraging FMC to consult with the CAP on issues that affect the Middleport community and to take that counsel into consideration when making decisions on those issues.
  • Assisting the regulatory agencies and FMC with educating the community on the complex ongoing environmental issues in Middleport concerning FMC.

The Middleport CAP's Accomplishments

It is the charge of the CAP to get credible information to the residents of Middleport. Working with FMC, the members of this group try to address the communities concerns as they are conveyed to us.

There have been regular updates on the schoolyard remediation, the Price Protection Program, the sampling programs and the remediation projects in the Village. CAP members also attend special community meetings scheduled by the Agencies (United States Environmental Protection Agency, New York State Department of Environmental Conservation, New York State Department of Health). Recent meetings pertain to FMC ongoing environmental program in Middleport.

Keep looking for more information on topics like this that are of interest to all Middleport residents. FMC is a part of our community and CAP members want our residents to understand the place FMC has in Middleport.

Recently, we worked together to hold a Plant Open House so that anyone interested could tour the FMC plant and learn about the workings of this facility. We have a mission statement that sums up well what this group is all about. "It is the express intent of the FMC Middleport Community Advisory Panel to provide residents of Middleport credible information regarding community issues, environmental concerns and activities, and FMC activities."

Maybe you will be called upon one day to be a part of this group. We hope you will say, "yes" as so many of your friends and neighbors have done in the past and are doing at the present.
