The BCAC was founded years ago by members of the Middleport community who loved and wanted to preserve the arts in our village. Through the years, the Art Center was involved in many activities including their very popular art show, which is now grown into an event sponsored by the Middleport United Methodist Church. Each year, the Barge Canal Art Center also awards two seniors at Royalton-Hartland $200 scholarships, one for musical excellence and one for art. BCAC member present our winners with their awards at the high school's annual awards ceremony. Recently rejuvenated, the BCAC with founding-member Barb Albone at its helm, and undertook their latest project, "Time for Middleport." The project is a historic preservation of the Middleport Community Clock that once hung on the Fenton Hotel on the canal bank. When the hotel was demolished in 1965, our reigning village fathers had the wisdom to preserve the clock. Although it is in a state of disrepair, it was fixed. The BCAC successfully sponsored various fundraising campaigns to collect the funds to restore and hang the clock on the Village Hall where it is now enjoyed by the whole community. The group also is involved with fundraising during Middleport's annual community yard sale, an Italian dinner and at the Middleport Labor Day festivities. |
