American Legion – Clute-Phillips Post #938

Clute-Phillips Post #938 of the American Legion was chartered on March 11th, 1921. The Post was named after two Middleport men who left together as comrades in arms in February 1918. Grover Clute was a member of the 307th Infantry, 77th Division who died in France in July 1918 from the effects of gas. Thomas Phillips, a member of the 326th Infantry, 82nd Division, was killed in France by machine gun on October 11, 1918.

The Post meets monthly from September through June every 2nd Tuesday, at 8 p.m. in the Legion hall (above the Village offices). We annually we organize a Memorial Day parade, an annual Veterans dinner held the 3rd Thursday of April, flag placement on all veterans graves each May and hold a Veterans' Day ceremony with free luncheon, provided by the Auxiliary.

We also select and sponsor a Boy’s State candidate from the Junior class from the Roy-Hart High School, to a week-long camp on Americanism, we donate and support the Middleport Free Library and we support and work with the local Boys Scout Troop #23 who conducts an annual Flag retirement ceremony.

The Clute-Phillips Post has an active American Legion Auxiliary who supports many of our activities. They collect donations for Poppies (made by Veterans) prior to Memorial Day, they made a soup and sandwich luncheon for Veterans' Day, collect and send packages to deployed veterans and conduct numerous activities of their own that support local families and benefit children and especially, children of veterans.
